You received an email from us asking you to click on the link to your personal download page. You go there and click on the download button, instead of being prompted by Windows to download your audio file, you see a new window appear with the Quicktime player!

You can hear your master alright but you can't download it! What happened?

Your computer's function to download WAV or AIF files (even mp3) has been cahanged by Quicktime, that's what. If you have you have already purchased the Quicktime "Pro" version but you are not sure, here is how you check. Pull down this menu:
  . Quicktime freeware
Play your audio file to prompt the Quicktime player  and click the left hand side arrow (at the very end of the player) and pull menu down. You will see more options including: "PRO SAVE AS SOURCE" and "PRO SAVE AS QUICKTIME MOVIE".

If the word "PRO" on these options look grayed out (see picture above) then you don't have the "Pro" version and you can't download the source (save as source). Pretty screwed up right? That's Quicktime for you.

So, what are you supposed to do? If you have FireFox you may want to skip what is next and click here, otherwise read on.

You have three options:
1/ Pay $30 to upgrade to Quicktime "Pro" which will enable to download audio/video content "as source" or as a movie.

What happened is that when you downloaded either Apples ITunes or Quicktime, these applications changed your computer download settings. If the Quicktime program came installed with your computer, it may have come already this way. You may also have your computer's downlod settings changed just by their Apple iTunes/Quicktime upgrades.

2/ Your second option is to uninstall Quicktime which probably will not allow you to play with your ITunes movies and music. If you don't care about this, then go to your PC's control panel: Start menu > Control Panel > Programs and Features (see picture below). From there find Quicktime or ITunes and uninstall it.

uninstall Quicktime

3/ The third option works well with FireFox. You will use your browser to change your download settings and prompts. From the top of the browser click on the "Tools" menu > select "Options"  > then click on the tab "Applications" (see the picture below).

This can be done as well by going to the control panel directly.

Find down the list the following:

WAV Audio (application/download)
WAV Audio (audio/x-wav)
WAV File

We are interested to reset "WAV Audio (audio/x-wav)".

WAV Audio (application/download)

When you change the action on the content type "WAV Audio (application/download)", sometimes it says "WAV Audio (audio/wav)", you will be giving to FireFox, instructions as to what to do when a file is being downloaded. For example, if you selected Windows Media Player, then WMP will execute as soon as it has been downloaded. You may not want this so pull down the menu and select "Save As".
always ask

WAV Audio (audio/x-wav)

When you change the action on the content type "WAV Audio (audio/x-wav)" you will be giving FireFox, instructions to "Always Ask", "Save As" or select a program. If you've been having getting a QT player it is probably selected already with "Quicktime" as the default program and thus, the reason it plays your master in the first place. So, change selection to "Always Ask". This will open up the Windows Download prompt and allow you to save the file wherever you choose in your hard drive :)

If you choose "Always Ask" you'll get a different type of download prompt, one that will allow you to chose an application to open the wav file (see picture below)

control panel

WAV File

This setting changes the action on wav files that are sitting in your hard drive. If you select a program (i.e. Audition) only that program will always open up your wav files. If you don't want this and want the option to choose from a list of programs, change it to "Always Ask".

You may need to reboot your PC for this settings to change.

Finally, you can also apply these same instructions for AIFF, MP3 and othet audio file formats to control the behavior of your browser and your PC computer This should work with any Windows PC and FireFox browsers.
