Analog vs. Digital Mastering

As a mastering engineer who operates strictly with the guidance of accurate spectrum analysis instrumentation, I have discovered that many records that were produced and entirely mastered with analog equipment, showed much to my surprise, several harmonic imbalances.

Some of these records came even from major record companies.

What benefits can there possibly be with pure analog mastering, if the sound delivery is less than perfect?

Are we forgetting that today's music is heard mainly through mp3 players?

That's the reason why digital mastering with its precision and ability to make less than ideal speaker systems, reproduce clear sound and improve bass response, will be the standard in the future.

Analog equipment, however, can be great addition to introduce a little "fuzz" vibe and color to an otherwise "sterile digital sound".
